چکیده

We report experimental energy distributions and yields of electrons emitted from MgO surfaces under the impact of slow noble gas and sodium singly charged ions at varying incident energies. At impact energies below 1 keV, electron spectra are nearly independent of ion type and energy. A tail of highenergy electrons is observed to grow at higher impact energies. The results are explained in terms of promotion of oxygen-2p electrons during binary projectile-oxygen collisions populating continuum and excitonic states. Excitons can significantly contribute to electron emission due to the negative electron affinity of the surface. 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The role of atomic collisions in kinetic electron emission from Al surfaces by slow ions

We measured energy distributions of electrons emitted in the interaction of slow Kr and Na with Al surfaces. The data allow to correlate emission intensities with spectral signatures of electron excitation processes. Our results indicate that electron promotion processes leading to the excitation of Al target atoms plays the dominating role in kinetic electron emission from Al surfaces by slow ...

First-principles study on secondary electron emission of MgO surface

We theoretically investigate secondary-electron-emission properties of MgO when noble gases are incident on the surface. We consider both potential and kinetic emission mechanisms. For the potential emission through Auger neutralization, densities of states and vacuum level are obtained from the first-principles calculations. It is found that secondary-emission coefficients decrease in the foll...

Ion-induced electron emission from MgO by exciton decay into vacuum

We report observations of electron emission from MgO surfaces induced by impact of 100 eV–4 keV He, Na, Ne, Ar ions. The energy distribution of emitted electrons is nearly independent of ion type and energy, showing that it is caused by the decay of an intrinsic electronic state of the solid excited by the ions. The similar yields and energy distributions for incident Na and Ne ions rule out th...

Plasmon excitation and electron promotion in the interaction of slow Na ions with Al surfaces

We studied the energy distributions of electrons emitted in the interaction of slow Na ions with polycrystalline Al surfaces. To study sub-threshold plasmon excitation we performed measurements as a function of emission angle which showed the excitation of bulk plasmons, confirming the kinetic nature of the excitation process. Electron spectra show narrow transition lines due to Auger decay in ...

Calculation of Secondary Electron Emission Yield From MgO Surface

Secondary electron emission yield values for rare-gas particles (He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe ions of atoms and molecules, metastable atoms, and excimers) of MgO deposited under optimum conditions for the highest values were calculated assuming the Auger transitions between the valence band, and the (oxygen ion vacancy + two electrons) and + (oxygen ion vacancy + one electron) centers in the MgO surf...
